Meet Ananya Indu Roy: The Lady Who Can Truly Create Treasure From Trash Perfectly

Still in today’s society, a successful woman is often seen through many different judging lenses. Many believe that prospering women in different fields glorify sheer luck, which has helped them to reach the pinnacle of success. The truth however is mostly always far from it.It is actually their sheer hard work, perseverance, self-management skills and love for their craft, which is the cornerstone of success. Their way of looking at things differently defines the difficult decisions they take and that ultimately results in defining the success stories we get to hear and read.

Here we have one such inspiring story of this young woman, Mrs. Ananya Indu Roy who despite having a prospective academic career chose to follow her dreams of art and makeup. Today she is a successful entrepreneur in handmade artifacts. Here is our interview with her.

How did all of these start?

I was good in academics but I was always inclined towards arts and crafts from a very young age. I have participated in numerous competitions at school and college level and have won many prizes and accolades. Post my graduation, I had appeared for TET exam, and have cracked it. It was at this particular period in my life, I had to think about what I wanted to do. Should I pursue the path offered owing to clearing the TET exam or should I follow my interest in arts and crafts. At that point, in my life, I decided to follow my passion and rest they say is history.

My journey as an entrepreneur was completely unplanned. I took this decision to follow my heart and answer my true calling in the field of creativity in 2012. At hindsight, it was an unorthodox decision of not pursuing an academic career and entrepreneurship happened instead. That crucial decision I would say was how it started.

Designing intricate fridge magnets and miniature figurines, as a profession in itself is an out of the box thought, how did you conceive this idea?

Home décor always has me excited. I have traveled to various expos, trade fairs, and exhibitions around the globe and everywhere I have collected those small souvenirs and mementos for home décor. These are things, which I feel fulfills the purpose of home décor and depict the cultural/geographical heritage of a place. In this correlation, I would like to state that I was astonished to find out that there very less home décor items available, which are based on the rich culture of Kolkata and Bengali people. This is when I had this idea where I wanted to promote our culture in my way by creating items for home décor with themes depicting my city and my people and selling them in affordable prices.

It had a very good response and many who bought suggested customizations and shared their ideas for improvisation. Their ideas I have imbibed them in my designs and I feel they have only improved me in my trade.

Were your family supportive of your decision to pursue your interest?

Letting go off a secure future as a Teacher had definitely raised some eyebrows and did cause some conflict within my relatives and over concerned people around me. However, both my parents were supportive of my decision. We had long discussions, we discussed all possible advantages, and downsides of this profession which I was planning to pursue then. Therefore, I was able to make an informed choice thanks to my parents. Their support made me even more determined in my decision.

What were the initial feedback?

From the very beginning, people started praising my creations. My artwork is a reflection of my personality and it really felt good when I saw some happy faces around me loving my work. My customers who are more like my family now are actually my biggest source of inspiration.

What keeps you going?

I am that kind of a person who is always in search of something new, and love to explore new ways of depicting my culture. I am always in constant search of doing something to match the standards of my own expectations and this zeal of doing something off beat is my biggest motivation that keeps me going.

What are your future aspirations?

My business venture Simply Chic Crafts is already flourishing by God’s grace. Pan India shipping is taking place. We have also started shipping them outside India and we are seeing very good responses from all. I expect this venture to continue growing and hope to fulfill everybody’s expectations.

I am also venturing into making designer handmade soaps and aesthetic home décor accessories, which can actually be customizable as per my customer’s knack and taste.

What is your message for other young entrepreneur and artists?

Do not stop dreaming. Give shape to your dreams by following your heart and every other thing will fall into its place. Turn your drawbacks into your strengths, if you are truthful and loyal in your work then no matter what you do, you will find that you are able to touch the intangible and achieve the impossible.
