5 ways to Celebrate Your Kid’s Birthday During Lockdownockdown

Birthdays are always special. No matter how many candles are put on your birthday cake, the people around you will give that special pampering for your birthday, and if it is the birthday of your tiny tot then it is all the more exciting.

It requires more of planning and more of fun filled activities on to the list so that you and your kid enjoy it to the fullest. It is very much understandable that it is difficult for them to cope up with the present corona panicked scenario, but it is much harder handling their emotions of ‘ no birthday party, no celebration’.

My suggestion is, do not get frustrated, take your time ,kids will gradually understand the importance of social distancing and why there is no celebration this year!

With a little bit of proper planning, organized teamwork (involve your spouse and other family members), and by making those creative chromosomes to work a little more, you can throw a  very special birthday party for your loved one so that in the years to come he or she will recall it as one of the most cherished birthday.

So, here we bring to you five such exciting ways to plan for a birthday party for your kid amidst lockdow

  1. Food: It is impossible to think for a birthday without a cake. This lockdown time, put on your chef cap and try your hands out, baking a cake by yourself. Your kiddo will love to cut a cake baked with love by their parents. You may also involve your kid during the cake mixing session so that it becomes interesting for him as well. Make it colorful and bright by using gems or candies , dry fruits on top. For little grown ups it can be decorated as per their taste. Search for little miniature dolls or cars from your kids toy basket and use them to decorate the cake(Obviously after proper sanitisation).

Secondly ,menu must be strictly decided by the kid himself, that will make him /her feel special and which will help you earn some more brownie points as a parent .In case of a toddler who cannot express his/her likable dishes, you may  prepare the palatable dishes which you think they  like the  most. Be little innovative, you may decorate a small table top to make a snack  buffet arrangement, having small baskets of muffins ,donuts, cookies etc. You may also have different flavours of fruit juices or a make shift ice cream parlor set up.

2. Decoration:For decoration, you may decide a particular theme for your munchkin. It can be a jungle based theme like the jungle book or a visit to the toy land like Noddy .Bring whatever toys your kids have, like teddy bears, pandas ,minions and treat them as invitees of the party. You can arrange a small tea party for the toys with play utensils at your backyard. Make the most of what is available at your home.

For the older ones, you can make card board cut outs of their favourite super heroes or cover the walls & the doors with big stickers of the same. You may put up homemade woolen pompoms, party poppers, balloons and banners. Recently within this lockdown period I have celebrated my son’s birthday, there we had used chart papers to cut out his name and then filled them with sparkles. It looked awesome and he liked it too.

3.Go digital: This will need a proper planning as well as help from others too. You have to arrange a digital party for your little one so that he or she can interact with their friends via a whatsapp or a zoom app. Take the help of the other parents, fix a time, tell them to put on their party dress. If you want to make it more exciting you can make a goody hamper filled up with mini cupcakes, sweets, candies, party cap prior and send them via courier ( Make sure everything thing is properly sanitized before packaging as well as inform the recipient too to sanitize them). This has  to be done  earlier and make sure it is delivered atleast a day before the D-day, and it will need a lot of organized procedure involving many people but you may try it out.

One more exciting thing which can be done is to record various A/V clips of birthday messages from grandpas, granny’s, uncles, aunts and cousins.Compile them together and make the little bundle of joy super happy.

4. Activities:Plan some engaging activities for him /her. It might be something like tail the donkey, treasure hunt, plant saplings, colour with veggies, or chase bubbles in a bubble filled room.Let them make mess, no scolding at all please!

The older ones may not like this idea so you can have a cozy movie night on the couch having their favourite movies on the player.

I have heard people even hiring magician to entertain their children in tabs.

5.Think out of the box:  Since the centre of attraction is your little kid,so you can have a performance round so that he/ she gets a bit more attention. They can recite a poem , tell a story, sing a song, dance or can have a fashion ramp walk. Whatever they are upto one thing is a mandate, clap ,clap and clap, i.e. give loads of appreciation. Other family members can also participate and spent a gala time together.

Also Birthdays mean we are growing up. So,why not teach some life skills and values to the children in these lockdown special birthdays. You can make  fifteen to twenty small pouches ( can add more if you wish) and tell your munchkin to lend their hand and fill them with masks ,santizers ,hand wash bottles etc .A day later someone from the family can distribute them to the needy and poor. This will help to inculcate in them values of caring and sharing.

Thus hope this will help you to plan a birthday party if it is now,  Although unusual still unique. Start preparing from now onwards even if it is few weeks ahead, sourcing all the things which you need.Hence have a blast with your little one and stay safe.
