Have you Been To The “Abode of Clouds” in India? If Not, Let this Be Your Next Holiday Destination

I am born with a soul of a wanderer and the feet of a traveller and I believe many of you do share the same spirit. Well, if you are a traveler by soul and a true lover of natural beauty at its best, Meghalaya must be on your “Must Check-in List”
Meghalaya–the ‘abode of clouds’, is a beautiful mountain-state that covers a good portion of North-East India. Meghalaya works as a separating line between Assam Valley and the plains of Bangladesh. Meghalaya is popular as a soothing and cool holiday destination all over India. It offers a wonderful mirage of scenic beauty and attracts a good number of tourists from all over the world year.
Cherapunjee and Mawsynram are the most famous attractions of Meghalaya, statistically representing the wettest places on Earth. Besides them, Meghalaya is rich with ample number of waterfalls that are in their best shape between June to September—during the rainy season.
Meghalaya is a very small state covering an area of around 22,430 square kilometers and is a home for a number of North-Eastern tribes like Garo and Khasi. Most interestingly you will experience a maternal societal system running in most of the tribes of Meghalaya.
Being a mostly forested state Meghalaya offers great biodiversity of animals and plants. Meghalaya is also famous for adventure tourism like trekking, mountaineering, caving etc.
Let us have a short glimpse of the attractions that makes Meghalaya one the most popular tourist destinations in India.

The village of Mawlynnlong which actually means ‘God’s Own Garden’ is famous for its eco-friendly tourism and clean surroundings. They also made an 80 ft. long tower by bamboo shoots in order to have an eagle’s view of the plains of Bangladesh that is quite near to the village.

- SACRED GROVE
Near about 45 minutes’ drive from Shillong will take you towards a sacred grove made and maintained my Khasi tribe. It houses a number of medicinal plants. Members of Khasi tribes often use this grove as the burning place of dead bodies. There is a 16 kilometer long David Scott trail near the grove that gives a great picturesque view of the hills. The grove is also near to a heritage Khasi village where you can experience traditional Khasi lifestyle.

Meghalaya is a home for many beautiful waterfalls of which Nohkalikai is the highest one, located near Cherapunjee.
